Description
Nuclear decommissioning includes all technical and management actions associated with the terminated operation of a nuclear installation and its subsequent dismantling to remove it from regulatory control while delivering an environmentally friendly end-product. It raises economic, environmental, and societal challenges for the stakeholders. This leads to increased awareness and interest among a variety of stakeholders, like decommissioning implementers, industry, operators, regulators, consultants, R&D organisations, universities, standardisation organisations, international organisations, waste management companies, and others. They all need to adopt adequate arrangements for implementing decommissioning programs globally and finding the solutions mutually.
The H2020 SHARE project, funded by the European Commission, has as main objective to provide an inclusive roadmap for joint near future decommissioning research for stakeholders to improve safety, reduce costs and minimize environmental impact in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
The SHARE commitment is to:
• build confidence in the steps needed during the next 10-15 years to generate knowledge on decommissioning and its safety, economic and environmental aspects
• encourage the future coordination of R&I addressing research topics strategically recommendable for financing in the next decades
To implement the SHARE, a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) will be established to define research priorities, develop a roadmap, and suggest targets that can actually be achieved in the field of decommissioning aiming at safety improvement, environmental impact minimisation and cost reduction.
This paper is focused on presenting the outcome of the opinions and views of interested stakeholders on the needs for researh for managing radioactive waste from decommissioning.
It is key goal of SHARE project to produce an impartial, balanced and reliable assessment of the opinions collected during the SHARE consultation based on the results of the survey on decommissioning research needs conducted by the SHARE consortium between 31 March and 1 July 2020 and additional input from the SHARE public workshop which took place in December 2020. The survey target population covered all main stakeholders within the field of decommissioning. A total of 224 complete responses were received.
The questionnaire was divided into 8 thematic areas, each one grouping various predefined sub- thematic areas well known as having major research needs. Respondents were asked to assess their needs for enhancement of the current situation for each sub-thematic area, assessing each topic in function of “Importance” and “Urgency“.
