Poster Public Health and Medical Response

Speaker

Prof. AYA ABAZA (Ass.Prof. of Safety and Prevention of Oncology in Radiation Protection Department, Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority, Cairo, Egypt.)

Description

After a radiological or nuclear event, acute radiation syndrome (ARS) will present complex medical challenges that could involve the treatment of hundreds to thousands of patients. Physicians, hospitals, and other health care facilities will assume the responsibility for aiding individuals injured by a terrorist act involving radioactive material. The aim was to provide a framework for physicians in pediatrics, internal medicine and the medical subspecialties to evaluate and manage large-scale radiation injuries. Conclusions based on radiation dose and physiologic response is made for treatment of the hematopoietic syndrome. Recommendations regarding a multidisciplinary approach built on international cooperation are the most reasonable strategy to provide the best possible medical care for radiation accident victims. There is a strong need for internationally recognized guidelines for the treatment of severely radiation exposed patients.
