Description
Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC) was established with the mandate of establishing and implementing a regulatory regime for ensuring the protection of people & environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation and security of radioactive sources.
At the request of SLAERC the IAEA has sent teams to Sri Lanka two times 2015 & 2018 to assist conditioning of radioactive sources accumulated in the Central Disused Sealed Radioactive Source Storage Facility (CDSRSSF) During these period SLAERC was able to collect DSRS namely Co-60, Cs-137, Sr-90, Am-241 & neutron sources. These DSRS have been inserted in 05 separate stain steel capsules and lead shielding and stored in concrete holes at CDSRSSF safely & securely.
SLAERC has made steps to repatriate number of DSRS from the above to the country of origin with several moisture density gauges. SLAERC already collected number of lightening arresters which contained Ra-226 & Am-241. In the future SLAERC expects to remove such sources & condition with the assistance of IAEA.
The National Policy on Radioactive Waste Management prepared by the SLAERC is in the final stage for publication. Therefore, SLAERC has made several efforts to implement the radioactive waste management activities for safely & securely.
