Description
The paper will disseminate experience, good practices and lessons learned from the global NORM generating mining industries with emphasis on ensuring safety and enabling sustainability during the decommissioning of NORM related O&G facilities and infrastructure applicable across all 7 tracks.
The ENVIRONET NORM Project was established in response to Member States’ interests and needs in 2014 initiating six working groups to address a broad set of topics and promote a holistic approach to NORM management:
1. NORM policies and strategies,
2. Developing national NORM inventories,
3. Assessing costs of NORM residue and waste management,
4. Characterization of NORM residues,
5. Establishing a circular economy for NORM residues, and
6. Decommissioning facilities of NORM-related industries.
Presentations of our progress have been made in May 2022, initially at NORM X in Utrecht, virtually to the NEA / OECD Expert HDCS Group in Paris and in October 2022 at the Biennial ENVIRONET meeting in Vienna. Specific NORM topics include:
• Application of the ICRP system to NORM management,
• Lessons learned related to both low-level radioactive waste and NORM management,
• Outcomes of the NORM X Symposium
• Developing circular economies for NORM residues, and
• New challenges and innovative approaches to decommissioning NORM-related facilities.
