Today there aren’t any decommissioning project in Egypt for research reactors in the near future, so the regulatory action is focused to the control of reports and other documents which will be necessary and applicable in due time. One of the important points that should be taken in our consideration during decommissioning of the nuclear or radiological facilities is the radioactive waste that produced from this process.
The waste arising from decommissioning is often different from the waste generated during normal operations or routine maintenance of the facility. Owing to specific characteristics, some of the waste could be considered as being problematic, for example waste for which application of routine methods of handling, treatment and conditioning is not appropriate and therefore requires special considerations for the selection of specific management options. For such decommissioning waste and material proper planning and selection of appropriate waste management and material management options are of particular importance from the organizational, safety and economic points of view.
In this work we will focus into some of radioactive waste management facilities in Egypt, which include low and intermediate level liquid radioactive waste treatment facilities, solidification plant and long-term storage facilities. Also, we will focus on the articles and items related to decommissioning, radioactive waste management and spent fuel from the Egyptian Nuclear law and its executive regulations. In addition to the compatibility of all of this with the IAEA safety standard (GSR part 6 "Decommissioning facilities) and the joint convention on the safety of spent fuel management and on the safety of radioactive waste management.
