Description
In the beginning of the year 2020, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) discovered radioactive elements in a field that was otherwise empty in the Batan Indah Housing Complex in the Setu District of South Tangerang. When BAPETEN was conducting function tests on the 30th and 31st of January in the year 2020, the detection of radiation from radioactive objects was observed. The waste or radioactive waste that was produced by previously utilized nuclear technology was the source of the radiation. The community, as one would expect, went into an uproar as a result of this, and the question "How could something like this happen?" was brought up. It is necessary to implement stringent and long-lasting safety precautions in order to win back the trust of the general people in the viability of nuclear power. The finding of radioactive waste in the homes of people is an illustration of the subpar execution of a physical protective system. To stop something similar from happening again, the system of physical protection, regulation, inspection, and monitoring needs to be enhanced. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (BAPETEN) work together to handle clearance for vacant land in the Batan Indah housing complex. This is a part of the efforts made by the Indonesian government to protect public and environmental safety from unwanted radiation hazards and to improve nuclear safety through the implementation of physical protection systems in nuclear facilities.
