Description
In Egypt, radioactive materials and sources are utilized exclusively for peaceful purposes in medicine, industry, agriculture, research and education. The application of these radioactive materials and sources generate radioactive wastes which must be managed safely and efficiently for the protection of human health and the environment as the residual level of radioactivity may be high. Egypt has collective experience in the management of radioactive waste from different sources of waste from research reactor complex, medical, industrial and research institutions. The existing national program should be expanded to be suitable for new NPPs.
Sustainable development depends on achieving two basic things: the right to development and the right to environmental protection, both of which are basic human rights. In order to achieve these two things in the field of safety of radioactive waste management, it is necessary to focus on; ◼ Legislation which provides the legal basis for requirements and responsibilities; ◼ An organizational structure consisting of a Regulatory Authority with the statutory responsibility of regulating use of nuclear and other radioactive materials and development of regulations, ◼and Waste management institution with the mandate of safe management (processing, storage and disposal) of the radioactive waste. These should be supported by adequate technical skills and experience at a level corresponding to the national needs as well as appropriate facilities and equipment.
This paper will be focused on law No.7 for the year 2010 and its executive regulations, policy and strategy of radioactive waste in Egypt and its compatibility with IAEA safety standard, and the radioactive waste management system in Egypt.
