Description

The Romanian experience in nuclear installations decommissioning began in 2010 by approving the decommissioning plan for VVR-S nuclear research reactor by regulatory body. At shortly, after reactor permanent shutdown the immediate dismantling strategy was chosen. This strategy allowed that those materials containing radioactivity are removed and/or are decontaminated to a level that permits the removal of regulatory control from the facility and its release, either for unrestricted use or with restrictions on its future use. To manage materials resulting from decommissioning, the authorization holder had the following routes: clearance, reuse, recycling or disposal. Sustainability and circular economy principles are two interrelated concepts that are increasingly being applied in various fields, including radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and remediation.
The paper presents our experience in manage the material resulting during decommissioning of the VVR-S Magurele nuclear research reactor.
