Description
Currently, Peru has high expectations regarding the potential offered by Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) technology as an alternative for sustainable and secure energy solutions, along with their low costs, owing to their advantages in various applications to counterbalance the social and environmental demands faced by the nation. However, the absence of specific legislation and regulatory framework poses challenges to be addressed for its implementation. This paper aims to analyse, considering provisions concerning regulatory quality enhancement and the Energy Policy until 2040, the current situational status of the legal and regulatory framework existing in Peru, identifying gaps and areas for improvement. It evaluates existing laws in the fields of energy, environment, and nuclear safety, emphasizing the need to adapt them to address the specific characteristics of SMRs and their applications. This analysis contributes to the discussion on the viability and effective implementation of SMRs in Peru, highlighting a robust regulatory approach tailored to the country's circumstances, where mechanisms to foster public trust and strengthen regulatory function are considered.
