Oral Track 4: Transportable SMRs

Speaker

Mr Stepan Zaitsev (JSC "NIKIET")

Description

Brief overview of current status of SHELF-M transportable SMR project, that is currently under development in JSC "NIKIET" and is planned to go operational in 2030.

Main characteristics of the first of a kind SNPP based on the SHELF-M: thermal capacity is 35 MW(t), electric capacity is 10 MW(e), fuel campaign is 8 years, tolerant fuel, enrichment up to 20 %, low energy intensity of the core, the length of the module does not exceed 11 m, diameter - 8 m; weight of the fully prepared module together with the reactor unit is 370 tons, service life of irreplaceable equipment is 60 years. The reactor unit is based on an integral PWR with a two-circuit core cooling scheme, the technology of which is well developed and has shown high safety of technical solutions. Both proven and innovative reactor engineering technologies are used in the development of the SHELF-M, including digital design and digital twin technology, extensive use of passive safety systems and additional protection barriers, compact placement of primary circuit equipment, and factory fabrication and testing of the reactor module. The design of a nuclear power plant based on the SHELF-M has low requirements to the territory of location, short construction period due to the use of fast-erecting structures and large-scale factory assembly, as well as decommissioning to the state of «greenfield site». In the future, it is planned to develop a serial power unit including a number of innovative solutions in terms of control system technologies and application of new materials, as well as optimized in terms of resource and mass-size characteristics.

The project is currently on detailed design stage, with conceptual design finished in 2023.
