The worldwide fusion programme is preparing for a transition from a science activity to one aimed at producing fusion energy on an industrial, power plant scale. The recent international push for a decarbonized power sector resulted in strong support from both the public and the private sector. In this workshop the commercialization path for fusion energy systems will be discussed. Fusion energy has the potential to satisfy the need for environmentally benign energy as well as providing energy independence — both critically needed today. Despite great progress, the goal of harnessing fusion for electricity production still has long timelines. The commercialization path is complex, requiring both government and private support. Therefore, this workshop seeks to bring together the main actors in the development of pathways for fusion commercialisation to highlight key points and gaps that need to be fulfilled to set up feasible commercialization routes for fusion energy systems.
The main objective of this event is to discuss the commercialisation paths for fusion energy systems in the current and future energy and economic scenarios. This workshop also aims to facilitate a discussion on how the industrial sector can support each other including partnership with the public sector towards the goal of commercial fusion. Experts and professionals from relevant fields will provide their qualified views on the market demands for fusion, and if the fusion enterprises will be able to deliver what the market is demanding.
This event is suitable for a broad audience, including investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and scientists working on fusion energy. Prior expert knowledge on fusion is not assumed.
A previous workshop in the series was held in Santa Fe, US in 2018. In addition, the 1st IAEA Webinar on Fusion Commercialization ‘Pushing for fusion energy – what is happening now?’ took place on 22nd November 2021
