Description
As an emerging strategic industry supported by the Chinese government, application of radiation science and technology has seen rapid development in recent years and is now at its golden age of fast development. The annual output of the industry in China has exceeded 300 billion RMB yuan (approximately 46 billion USD) in 2016, which is expected to maintain an annual growth of 15% to 20%.
Entrusted by the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and other related ministries, Chinese Nuclear Society (CNS) has carried out a two-year-long nation-wide survey on this industry of radiation science and technology application since late 2015 in order to have an overall idea of the major achievements in the past ten years, its important role in improving people’s living and health and the opportunities and challenges facing the industry in order to predict its development trend in future. A comprehensive report is under preparation.
This paper present the key outcome of the survey. Part One provides a general description of the development status of application science and technology in China. Part Two details on China’s efforts in development ray source such as accelerator, isotope, and related integrated installations based on accelerator or with gamma ray, inspection equipment based on ray imaging, non-destructive inspection equipment, etc. Part Three introduces more in detail the application of radiation science and technology in industry, agriculture, health care, environment protection, and national security in China. Part Four sketches China’s effort in education and training for this industry. Part Five estimates the prospect of the application of radiation science and technology in China in the future.
