Invited Opening Session

Speaker

Frédérick Bordry (CERN)

Description

Introduction of particle accelerators will be given including a historical overview and different types and domains of accelerators. LHC will be given as an example to illustrate the different phases: design, technology challenges, production of the components, infrastructures, installation, power and beam commissioning, operation (with indicators), maintenance, consolidation and upgrade. The global roadmap of CERN and more generally of High Energy Physics in the next 50 years will be discussed. Conclusion with the lessons learned during the long process from accelerator design to operation will end the talk.
