Abstract
The Kingdom of Morocco is giving growing importance on clean energy supply and climate change issues, recognizing the potential of nuclear energy in addressing these global challenges. In this context, as a national regulator, the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR) follows closely the developments of the emerging nuclear technologies related to safe and clean energy production.
Established under Law 142-12, AMSSNuR is mandated to conduct a continuous regulatory watch. Article 172(p) assigns to AMSSNuR the regulatory watch in the areas of radiological and nuclear safety and security, safeguards, and non-proliferation, as well as in scientific, health, and medical matters concerning the effects of ionizing radiation on health, taking into account international developments.
AMSSNuR is actively engaged in international efforts to evolve nuclear safety by contributing to the review and development of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety standards. Furthermore, AMSSNuR participates in the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI), working alongside global experts to benefit from their shared experiences and to support the harmonization of nuclear safety frameworks.
With the growing global interest in nuclear fusion as a promising nuclear energy source, AMSSNuR’s regulatory watch process ensures the follow-up of nuclear advancements and emerging technologies in order to anticipate the regulatory infrastructure needs.
The paper highlights AMSSNuR’s commitment to ensure the regulatory watch through the international cooperation to benefit from global experiences and to build expertise by anticipating future regulatory infrastructure needs. It underscores Morocco’s proactive approach to support nuclear safety and the continuous improvement in addressing emerging nuclear technologies, including the opportunities and the risks associated with the nuclear fusion.
