Description

The event will be hosted via Webex. Register here.

The IAEA and American Physical Society (APS) have established cooperation in the Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) 2022.

The American Physical Society (APS) Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) are three-day regional conferences for undergraduate physics majors. The purpose of APS CUWiP is to help undergraduate women continue in physics by providing them with the opportunity to experience a professional conference, information about graduate school and professions in physics, and access to other women in physics of all ages with whom they can share experiences, advice, and ideas.

IAEA has partnered with APS CUWiP and will host webinars featuring both IAEA and CUWiP talks on careers for women in nuclear, plasma and accelerator physics, including Keynote Speaker Dr Donna Strickland, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018, and highlights from the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme.

The programme will revolve around two main themes: Learn & Connect – focusing on nuclear, plasma and accelerator physics:

New ideas are born in the life experience. Therefore, diversity, having people with different backgrounds working together around a problem, is central for solving the problems of the world regarding health, water, energy, environment and wealth distribution. However, women are only 30% of the scientists and 13% of the physicists.

In this talk we show evidence of the lack of female representation in physics and particularly at leading positions. We also bring data how diversity means efficiency and how we can create this diversity by empowering women through equity and empathy.

We also present a real example of how looking for the unusual in nature allowed a scientist to build a new idea for helping to obtain more clean water.

Speaker: Marcia Barbosa (Director of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Full Professor of Physics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil)

Are you an undergraduate student interested in gaining first-hand research or technical experience in the areas of energy sciences, nuclear physics, plasma physics, or accelerator research? Then this session is for you! Come learn about two internship opportunities available through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists - the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. Panellists will include former SULI and CCI interns, a DOE National Laboratory research scientist with experience mentoring interns, and National Laboratory program staff.
WDTS lab-based internship programs are opportunities for 2- and 4-year college and university students to discover science and technology careers at the DOE National Laboratories and gain the experience needed to transition from intern to employment. Under the mentorship of scientists and engineers at DOE laboratories, SULI and CCI interns engage in real-world research and technical projects, respectively, that advance solutions in areas including materials sciences, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum information science, machine learning, nuclear and renewable energy, fusion energy R&D, accelerator technology, environmental management, and advanced manufacturing. Both programs are stipend-based and available in the Spring, Summer, and Fall terms.

Conveners: Allison M. Truhlar (Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy), Ping Ge (Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy)

Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time. They published this Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester.

Strickland earned a B.Eng. from McMaster University and a PhD in optics from the University of Rochester. Strickland was a research associate at the National Research Council Canada, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a member of technical staff at Princeton University. In 1997, she joined the University of Waterloo, where her ultrafast laser group develops high-intensity laser systems for nonlinear optics investigations.

Strickland served as the president of the Optical Society (OSA) in 2013 and is a fellow of OSA, SPIE, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society. She is an honorary fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Physics and an international member of the US National Academy of Science. Strickland was named a Companion of the Order of Canada.
