Poster NORM Characterization, Measurement, Decontamination Session IV - Characterization in Industrial Facilities and in the Environment

Speaker

Dr Amal Alsayahien (Ministry of Water and Irrigation)

Description

People in Jordan have become more interested in NORM characterization in industries in the last two decades as a result of increased concern about NORM health effects especially after conflicting news about uranium concentrations in the kingdom which made them fear of the transport of radioactive elements to the environment. This paper provides a review of the potential risks from of NORM in some industries in Jordan, with an emphasis on those radioisotopes (238U, 226Ra, 228Ra and 210Pb) which contribute in a significant way to the overall effective dose by exposure or intake. Since these elements present in the Earth's crust, the paper highlighted an assessment of NORM concentrations in some industries that use terrestrial raw material such as Building material, Phosphogypsum, and fertilizers.
