Crude oil production is an important industrial sector, whether in Iraq or in the world. Radioactive materials, sealed sources, and radiation generators, and many solid and liquid wastes containing naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are produced in the oil and gas industry are
The presence of these radioactive materials and radiation generators results in the need to control occupational and public exposure to ionizing radiation
In Iraq, it was not dealt seriously with NORM until the first report handed over to government agencies in 2008, and then in 2012, the decision was taken to establish a NORM management plan to protect workers and the environment from pollution risks.
The current situation: There are 44 facilities where Norm was not characterized and identified, in addition to hundreds of thousands of tubes and tons of solid materials contaminated with the NORM.
