Description
This work describes and discusses the current state of practices that include NORM material in Serbia, defining the main issues at present and directions for improvement in the future. Different types of activities in the country are candidates for NORM tackling questions, such as coal and lignite mining, extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas, mining of metal ores, combustion of coal, oil and natural gas, together with uranium mining legacy site management. Therefore, the investigation on the matter classified the following groups of issues related to the subject: 1) Compliance with the European Union regulations in the process of accession negotiations with the European Union, creating a comprehensive regulatory framework on NORM; 2) Classification and inventory of NORM practices; 3) Assessment of historical and present amounts of NORM; 4) Predictions about the future generation of NORM; 5) Material storage capacities assessment; 6) Radiation protection system evaluation and technical aspects on risk reduction; 7) Development of easy, fast and reliable measuring techniques for NORM, and 8) Creating the comprehensive radon map in the country.
