Description

Development of oil industry in Azerbaijan led to formation of attendant industrial facilities such as, iodine production plants which were established mainly in XX century. Iodine production industry caused environmental problems in Azerbaijan on Absheron peninsula as a result of insufficient attention paid to protection of environment in the period of former USSR. Caused environmental problems providing with accumulation of NORM contaminated charcoal in field, formed in the process of iodine-bromine production in the territory which located in vicinity of settlements and seriously threatened health and welfare of people. With implementations of appropriate remediation projects, contaminated sites were successfully restored with elimination of the pollution source. In this work information on remediation activities for NORM contaminated sites are presented. The main aim of this work is carrying out discussion on appeared difficulties and factors during the remediation process.
