Poster NORM Inventory Session II - NORM Inventories

Speaker

Mr Antti Kallio (Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK))

Description

The FINNORM-project at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland aims to update the Finnish NORM-inventory, develop recommendations for the practical enforcement of recently updated NORM-regulations, produce informative communication materials for the industry, investigate protocols for exposure assessments and their evaluation by the regulator, and make case studies on selected topics.
In this work we will provide the status of the NORM-inventory of Finland and an overview of the NORM-involving activities in Finland, including regulatory and legislative issues of interest, especially from the point of view of NORM-waste management. Thus far the main identified NORM-related industries in Finland are mining, milling and metal processing industries and scrap metal recycling. Some industries from the EU-BSS Annex VI have not completed their assessment yet, for example if the industry is being newly developed in Finland. In connection with the NORM-inventory, the amounts and types of NORM-waste in Finland and their disposal will be discussed. NORM-waste is not classified as radioactive waste under the Radiation Act of Finland. The challenges and identified good practices for building a NORM-inventory will be discussed.
