Problem formulation: the transposition of the Council Directive.

Institute of Public Health has surveyed the current status of NORM/TENORM situation in Hungary in order to provide assistance in the transposition of the Council Directive and to develop the system of the authority requirements. The survey was commissioned by the of Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority. Assessing the gathered information is in progress now.

Methods/Measurement/Discussion

The Institute carried out on-the-spot measurements in order to survey the radiological situation caused by NORM, the amount and quality of the materials to have a national review about the usage of NORM.
The survey consisted of gathering information on the World Wide Web and on-site visits. The survey was supported by the Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary, who assisted with their maps available and knowlegde about the scene. We have completed the measurement of the designated Hungarian mining areas and factories, the activity concentration of most samples have been investigated using gamma spectrometry. Assessing the information we estimated the doses of the public arising from the disposed NORM and in some cases the doses of the workers arising from the used naturally radionuclide containing materials.

Conclusion

We investigated and updated the data survey system which had been created by our Institute. A MS Access data acquisition program had been created for implementation of the unified data survey which program sets up unified system of criteria to describe and register the different activities. This data acquisition program can be the base of the Hungarian NORM/TENORM inventory.
We have prepared a proposal for the classification of the NORM/TENORM situation in Hungary based on radiation levels and activity concentrations as well as international experience.
The dose estimation is also necessary in order for the right classification of the situation and the radioactive material, legislation point of view (notification, licensing).
